The Contemporary Art Platform (CAP) and Selections Magazine are proud to present Cultural Narratives, a collection of works showcasing more than 200 artists from the Middle East.
ABOUT CULTURAL NARRATIVES
Mapping the Art World of the MENA region with an extensive travelling art show by established and emerging talents, Cultural Narratives is a foundation with big motivations set to small parameters. The collection started in 2015 commissioning artworks of 20*20cm in dimension, from Lebanese and Syrian artists. This was to be exhibited for the first time at the 2015 Beirut Art Fair. .
The success of the show led to the expansion of the collection and introduced the participation of most of Lebanon and Syria’s neighboring countries. Since then Cultural Narratives has collected more than 200 works from emerging talents and established artists. The aim is to stimulate the interest of regional and international audiences and inform the collective consciousness about the copious creative activity in the region as well as drawing attention to the dynamism existing amongst these neighboring countries. Cultural Narratives is a foundation that celebrates diversity and community equally.
The collection includes Artists from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon Palestine, Tunisia, UAE, Syria, Sudan and has recently opened the channel for artists from Turkey, Africa and India. Most importantly, this project is a platform for free artistic expression. It is a strictly non-commercial project hence all art works are strictly exhibited for none-commercial purposes. The artists donating works benefit from media exposure in Selections Magazine and Selections online platforms. Moreover Cultural Narratives takes full responsibility of exhibiting the collection in numerous art institutions around the world. Each exhibition is accompanied with the latest Cultural Narratives edition: a catalogue comprising of all the artworks on display.
PAST EXHIBITIONS
Beirut Art Fair September 2015
The display consisted of 30 works by Syrian artists and 30 artists from Lebanon hung on wooden shipping crates at the entrance of the fair.
AlSerkal Avenue pop up show 21 Feb – 24 March 2018
The exhibition contained within the confound of a provisional showroom focused on the concept of “no borders” displaying Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon Palestine, Tunisia, UAE, Syria and Sudan in consecutive formation.
ABOUT SELECTIONS MAGAZINE
Published 4 times a year, Selections Magazine is a publications focusing on contemporary outlooks and cultural testimonies in the Arab world and beyond. 25,000 copies per issue are distributed internationally through a selective mailing system and dispersed in most bookstore regionally. Founded in Beirut in 2006 as the brainchild of Rima Nasser, Selections gained its popularity amongst the local art community and the general public for its innovative content and iconic look. It traces the currents of contemporary culture by featuring articles, interviews, and conversations documenting the vivid voices of influential critics, artists, collectors, curators and art lovers. Focusing on key figures in the cultural landscape, Selections Magazine’s mission is to evolve with the creative movements of our times.
ONLINE SUPPORT & PARTICIPATION
A link to “Cultural Narratives” can be found on the website www.selectionsarts.com. The online platform archives the entire collection including information about the artists by region. An online application is available for artist submissions. Interested participants must also submit by email: Name, biography, country of citizenship, a self-portrait (photo or other) to the following address: yasmina.nysten@citynewsme.com to receive further information and requirements.
