KUKI JIJO

Xe Loves You

Using mainly found materials that are collaged, manipulated and censored, the artist reimagines and explores definitions of sinner and saint, and the underlying restrictions of self-expression that limit access to a marketed sense of enlightenment.

The title Xe Loves You is a reference to the divine and their love for the viewer regardless of gender, orientation or sin count.

Tareq Sultan (Kuki Jijo) is a visual artist living in Kuwait. He is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and continued his studies at Parsons The New School for Design.
Drawing on his iPad on screenshots of magazine covers, Tareq uses modified forms of re-appropriated imagery, pop cultural and religious iconography, and an arguably degraded hybrid of colloquial Arabic and English as parts of its core communicative instruments. Sultan tackles subjects such as gender identity, human sexuality, pop culture, and idolization within the scope of self-expression and censorship in Middle Eastern media.
